Paradise found!

OK, I have to admit, I was a little worried about this vacation. It is hot here where we are and everywhere else we are going and we are Oregonians, used to the rain and clouds and greenness! But the heat really has been bearable. Since arriving Saturday we have had highs in the 102-107 range. But when I am floating in the pool watching the beautiful blue sky and the palm trees all around I cannot help but feel I am in paradise. Our room is always cool and there is water galore here at the resort. Richard and I got up early and did some exploring, we got to see the 4BR penthouse units, wow talk about luxury!! Then we got the little kids and headed to the pools. We floated the lazy river and swam in the big pool a while until Adrienne called to tell us Grandma and Grandpa Loomis had arrived for a visit. They did not want to sit in the heat to watch us playing so Richard headed up to the room while I got the kids dried off. Well, in the second phase of the resort is another pool and we happened to see that the HUGE water feature was turned on! Yippee! I couldn't resist, so we headed over there for a while. This thing is probably 20 feet or taller and Joseph, who is usually my fearful one was all over it having a great time! The water in the pools are semi cool in the mornings, but during the day they get quite warm. In the evenings its kind of like taking a bath. Well the fountain water was COLD, and I went in for a bit to cool off, it felt great! After that we had a nice afternoon of visiting with the Grandparents and they took us to In-N-Out for dinner. Yummy!

After dinner we headed back to the pools. We had some noodles and the kids enjoyed floating the river on them. The older kids joined us too so we had a nice family evening. Now I am hoping the little ones will get to sleep soon!

Sunday we got up early and had a yummy breakfast with the extended Loomis bunch. Lesa fixed her delicious eggs and fruit and lots of other fun things. The kids got to play with the cousins Daydin and Ella. Then we headed off to church. We found a ward meeting at 11 and Lesa was kind enough to spend that time with us and came along. It is so nice to know that no matter where you are, church is such a familiar thing. We did not see the sign on the church, and the style was much different than we are use to in Hillsboro, but we recognized it anyway. We were greeted by many people and really enjoyed the sweet spirit of the Parkview Ward.

Tomorrow is Jacob's birthday! He will be 14 so we are going to spend the day at Knott's Soak City water park. More fun in the sun!! I will be posting more tales of our travels soon as well as more photos. I love to blog, but after a long day like today, I am really tired by the time the little ones are in bed!

Finally here!!

I just wanted to update all my blog readers(both of you) that we are here!! It has been a long journey and my family is awesome! Our first day we got up early and left by 4am. We traveled almost 15 hours before stopping for the night. The kids were great and didn't complain(mostly)! We stopped in Kettleman and then got up this morning and headed on to Indio, an additional 6 hours or so! There is a huge fire burning somewhere here in California and the sky was hazy with smoke from the OR/CA border most of the way here, making it hard to see very far. It was a long couple days, but we are here and it is beautiful! It was about 108 this afternoon and I am so grateful for the invention of AC. Our room is lovely with plenty of room for all and the resort is incredible with several pools, a wonderful game room, a lazy river, several wading pools for little ones and a pizza place on site that delivers. There isn't a lot nearby, but the resort did a very good job of having enough to do that you wouldn't really need to leave the resort. After relaxing and letting the sun set we ventured out to the pool area and had a great time playing the very warm water till after dark!!

I am adding some photos, I will write more later, but it is late and I am going to bed now!!

The other view from our room(Jacob's Favorite)
Glad to have daddy's attention somewhere other than the road!!

Ahhh, summer!

Yesterday was a hot day! I took the little kids to the fountain downtown for some cool off time. We went a little before 11 and had the fountain to ourselves for a short while. Sometimes later in the day it gets incredibly full of children, and a few mom's. I had fun watching and taking pictures and getting the rest of my book read. I am so grateful for all the wonderful things there are to do here locally as well as all the exciting adventures we can have, all within an hour or so of here. We are very blessed to live in this area.

A special thanks to the City of Hillsboro for keeping our parks so nice and for constantly adding new ones and for offering great classes and programs for the kids! For hosting Saturday and Tuesday Markets and the air show and for building a beautiful new library for us to enjoy. And thank you Oregon, for your beautiful beaches, your gorgeous forests for us to explore and enjoy, for the lovely mountain views you offer, and for your lovely weather that keeps everything so green and pretty(except for our grass, but that is my fault not yours, heehee).

Later it was time for swimming lessons! Richard had a busy day at work still catching up on being gone for a week, so I didn't think he would make it. He has not yet had the chance to watch the kids in action, only short videos I have taken. I told Joseph that daddy might come to watch and every 5 seconds or so he would look over at me to see if he was here yet. Lucky for me Richard showed up! He was a few minutes late, but got too see most of the class. Joseph was practicing his back stroke with the teacher when he daddy arrived and he glanced over and saw us and said very excitedly to his teach, "That's my daddy". We are looking forward to our big vacation so we can work with both the kids on the things they are learning! Only 10 days to go!!

Scouts Versus Wild

My guys are back, at least one of them is! Richard may have accidentally brought home another boy from camp instead of Jake. It looks just like him, talks just like him, but he ate grasshoppers at camp and that just CANNOT be my son! They had a wonderful time, better than the year before and we had fun talking all weekend about their adventures! Jacob worked hard and earned 7 merit badges at camp. He is about to advance to Star Scout and almost has enough to earn his Life Scout rank, though he has to wait 6 months to get that. Then his Eagle Scout rank 6 months after that, which he should have around his 15th birthday! I am so proud of Jake. When Richard got home he told me how much the little kids had grown since he had left. Well, I can honestly say the same of Jake. It is amazing the difference one week can make!

Jake decided to earn his wilderness survival badge, which meant going on an overnight journey, missing dinner, and sleeping with nothing but a survival foil blanket. He said he got awfully cold, but he did survive! When he told me he ate grasshoppers I felt really bad! I said, I am so sorry they made you eat grasshoppers. I was sure it was a requirement. But no, that was optional and very few boys tried them. He said they were pretty good once you got the head off! YUCK! The brown ones tasted like chicken and the green ones tasted like watermelon. I will just have to take his word on that. He told me that 32 grasshoppers is one serving, but he only ate a few.

Richard went on a Scoutmaster horseback riding excursion and even worked on getting his Scoutmaster badge. So they both accomplished a lot while they were gone. They came home a little bit sore, a lot tired, but both were glad they had gone!

When Jake was 12 and left the cub scouts to join the older kid scouting program he was into the show Man VS Wild. His big idea was to make a show called Scouts VS Wild. He talked about that all the time. I think Jacob could truly do such a thing now!!

We were very happy to have daddy and Jake back home! Friday night I took the kids to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. This is a 24 hour walk to raise money. We have been involved in it for many years now because my sister Megan has always had a team and for the last few years has been on the committee. We have always enjoyed supporting her in this important cause! Our camp was near the sand pit, so the kids spent most of their time playing in the sand! I left Adrienne and Annalina to spend the night because they really wanted to. Joseph and I went home around 9:30 and he slept in my bed with me. He really wanted a movie on, so I put one in and five minutes later he rolled over and went to sleep.

In the morning we went back over. The girls had a long night. They slept under a shade tent, but got very cold when the dew settled on them and they probably only slept 4 hours or so. They were very tired, but they had fun. Adrienne took very good care of Annalina for me and I appreciated that very much! Adrienne also got to spend some time getting to know Wendy a little bit better. They had fun comparing and listening to music on their i-pods.

We left around 1 to get home to greet the boys. And they got home not long after that! It also happened to be Richard's birthday!! After a long shower and a long snuggle session with Joseph, he opened gifts. He got a small RC helicopter that he has had great fun flying with the kids. We had pizza for dinner and home made ice cream for dessert. It was an eventful day and I was hoping to blog about all the on Sunday, but didn't get time until now.

I will add picture of camp later when I have access to the 900+ photos Richard took while at camp!

Boys NEED their fathers!!!!

Richard is gone and suddenly I am the enemy! Joseph hasn't really said a whole lot about daddy being gone, but it is obviously affecting him quite a bit, and he appears to be blaming me! He crawled in bed with Annalina and I at about 2am last night. He laid next to me and I swear he turned circled for about 10 minutes before I woke up completely. He just could not get comfortable. So I asked him if he wanted to go back to his own bed and surprisingly he said yes. So he was up super early which meant Curious George time. I fell back to sleep on the sofa and awoke to Joseph kicking me in the shins, ouch! Obviously he was a bit grumpy and needed my attention, but as the day went on he got more and more contrary so that I finally just left him home for Annalina's soccer camp instead of bringing him along to play. Adrienne was kind enough to watch him so I could have an hour of peace watching Annalina. Upon my return, she reported that he had been pretty stinkerish. He came up to me and said very matter of factly, "Adrienne put me in time out". I asked him why and he said, "Cause I was kicking her". I told him he better go say he was sorry, but he would not. So I told him he wouldn't get to go to his own soccer class so he went up and yelled through the bathroom door at her that he was sorry. She was in the shower, so she probably didn't even hear, but its the principle right? ::sigh::

At 1 Annalina and I took him to his soccer class which was fine, until the last 5 minutes when the teacher asked the parents to play a 1 on 1 game with their child. He got really upset that I would try to take part in his class! I know he was tired, so I am trying not to take it too personally. He yelled all the way home and kicked the back of my seat, so he earned himself a nice little nap. A good break for me and he desperately needed the rest. I think its amazing that he lets me put him down for naps. He whines and cries the whole way up, but once I get him on his bed, I can usually distract him with choices. Do you want the shades up or down? which music do you want to listen to? I think he feels in control of his nap environment so he willingly stays in bed and falls asleep. And it does him a world of good!

Swimming lessons were good. Although I was sitting on the other side of the pool watching, Joseph tried to throw water at me when I waved at him. He looked mad, then he smiled. Who knows!! I just think its my turn to go away next, but perhaps I need to wait for the boys to get home!

We got home and I noticed the lawn is looking not so happy. Its been very hot this week. Hmmm...we have a temporary sprinkler system set up, why isn't that helping? OH yeah, I ran over one of the sprinklers last week so Richard must have turned it off. I tried to turn that on(its all VERY complicated), but a fountain erupted out of the broken one (what was I expecting?), so I had to take that one apart and set up the big rainbow like sprinkler. It was successfully watering our yard and the neighbors truck, and most of his house when the kids came out. They have fun getting drenched while I made adjustments. Good thing my neighbor is out of town! The other good news is his house is safe if a wildfire goes through the area.

On a happy note, my bathroom is clean! Except for the shower, I hate scrubbing that textured floor. Any suggestions on keeping that clean would be appreciated! That's about it for my to do list so far, but my room is about halfway there. I can walk down my side of the bed without stepping on clothing or anything else!!

The other good news, we got a postcard from Richard today. They are having fun riding horses and doing other scouty things. I doubt Richard has been kicked at all this week! We miss him and are glad he is having a good time. Annalina thinks scouts sounds great if you get to ride horses!! She misses daddy too, but she deals with it by being extra helpful. Its a nice contrast to Joseph!

Sorry for the tantrum earlier, typing in all caps is not as satisfying as kicking and screaming, but it helped take the edge off and I am trying to set a good example for Joseph! Maybe I need to introduce him to blogging!

Wow...

I MISS MY HUSBAND!

More on this later maybe if I can clear my mind...

Halfway there!

It is day three, and the men will be back in three days, so we are halfway there! There were a lot of projects I wanted to get done this week, but it has been so hot and I guess that is the opposite of inspiration for me. And yes, we do have AC, but you know how it is when you get to working and then you get all sweaty and hot! Yuck, thinking of it makes me want a cool shower. Maybe tomorrow I should crank up the AC and freeze the house so I have to get moving to stay warm(or will I just want to stay in bed where its warm)! OK, so my list is

#1 Clean my room It has stayed pretty nice since we moved in, but lately I have been a bit too comfortable and I have craft stuff and laundry all over the place. Once I get it organized and vacuumed it will look great. That means a lot of folding laundry....hate that!

#2 Clean my bathroom Notice I said MY bathroom! Richard has a sink and I guess I really think of the shower as his, though I use it daily. But he doesn't spend quality time in the bath, so since I love it more, its MINE! hehe I love my bathroom, it is very spacious and I finally have my own tub! It was one of the reasons I really wanted this house! But it needs a good cleaning. The mirrors go all the way to the ceiling, so I am going to have to climb up on the counters to get them all the way clean. This is something I have done I think twice in the year and a half we have lived here.

#3 Organize the Laundry Room It is on the way out to the garage and at times it is just difficult to get through. Also, its more inspiring to actually do laundry when the room is cleaned up and nice looking. I read once that if you wallpaper or paint the laundry room you will want to spend more time there. I doubt I'd be there much more than I am now, but walking through to the garage could be a nice experience!! Who am I kidding?? I think I will focus on just getting it cleaned up and organized.

#4 Organize my pantry. I don't really think I will get around to that this week, but I'd like to have it done before we leave on vacation. It is just hard to find anything in there. And when I cannot find anything to fix for dinner our budget gets strained by a night of eating out. We are desperately saving for the trip, so I have to do my part! What am I talking about? I am the only one saving! It's tough to be the CFO of the family!

I guess the best way to get going on my list is to get off the computer and get started. Well swimming lessons start in an hour or so, maybe I will get going on my chores this evening!

Two Days without Daddy and counting...

I think the kids are missing daddy more than they can express verbally. Yesterday Joseph put on his shoes and declared he was walking back behind the house to Camp Ireland, which is a boy scout camp mostly used for the cub scouts. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was going to get daddy from Camp Ireland. I had to explain that daddy was far away in another boy scout camp. I am not sure that he understands that. Also, he had an accident before getting up this morning and another while trying to get dressed. He hasn't had any accidents in the last couple weeks, so I cannot really complain. I think deep down having daddy gone is affecting him a lot! Poor guy!

He did get to go to his first day of Soccer camp today though! First we went to Annalina's, then to his. Luckily his was indoors at the Tyson Rec Center, it was air conditioned! It was so fun to watch him try to pay attention and follow instructions. He learned how to walk in and out of the cones, then how to kick into the goal and finally how to do small dribble kicks. He was concentrating so hard! He is such a sweet boy, when someone else would take away his ball, he would just go and get another one to use. And when his teacher would hand him a new ball he would say Thank You! My kids are all such a great source of pride and joy for me. I really love being a Mom. I think they bring joy to others often as well. And I love that about them.

When Annalina was four, we were at the grocery store and a woman was pushing her older son in a stroller that was too small for him. He was probably 7 or 8 and he was disabled in some way and it was very sad to see. He was not very aware of what was going on around him. Annalina looked over and said, "Mom, that's my friend" and then she went over and said hi to him. The mother looked quite surprised by this, but then she smiled and teared up a bit. The boy most likely did not even hear her, but I could see that it deeply affected the mother.

Of course they both have their moments, but all in all, they are wonderful! And now I have it posted in my blog so when those difficult days come along, I can look back and remember that being a mom really is GREAT!

Sweet Jake

I have three sisters and no brothers. Jacob was my first son and the first grandson to my parents. I had always heard that boys were different from girls, that they develop at a slower rate. So while Jacob had his quirks as a two and three year old I truly thought it was just normal delays. Shortly after his third birthday I found myself a single parent. Jacob would throw terrible tantrums. I often found myself in the middle of the grocery store with a cart full of things when he would explode into kicking and screaming and there was no way I was going to wait in line to checkout with him like that, especially with all the "looks" I got from others. So I had to leave without the groceries. Adrienne had gone through a tantrum phase, so I thought it was normal. Jacob had a baseball cap that he wore ALWAYS. If he woke up in the morning and it was not on his head he would cry until he found it. That cap got really gross and I had to sneak it out in middle of the night to wash it and have it back to him by morning. Jacob also had to have something in his hand at all times. He had a doctor kit with a fake shot in it and that was his constant companion for a long time until it got lost. Jacob did not communicate much. He did not answer my questions, but he could recite entire scenes from Beauty and the Beast. Jacob would not wear jeans or anything too stiff. He lived in sweats mostly. All of these may seem like huge warning signs, and perhaps I should have put it all together sooner, but I was young and going through a divorce and was perhaps distracted by all my new responsibilities as a single parent. And he was a boy and we all know boys develop a little slower, right?

I took Adrienne and Jacob to a WIC appointment. This is a program to help lower to middle income families with nutritional information as well as providing supplements of foods such as milk, cereal, cheese, peanut butter, etc. I met with the intake nurse who talked to the kids and then suggested I get Jacob evaluated. I took him to the family doctor who told me he was not a normal little boy taking his time developing, but that there was definitely something wrong and he referred us to a psychiatrist at St Vincents. My dad took us to that appointment and it meant a lot to me to not be alone.

I had an idea that Jacob was autistic. Sally, a friend of the family who had watched the two kids when I worked for several years, worked with autistic children in the school system and she told me there were a lot of similarities between Jacob and the kids she worked with. So I am sure the doctor was surprised at the way I handled the news. He played with Jacob for a while and asked a lot of questions of me. Then he gave me the diagnosis. I was not terribly upset, nor did I cry. He proceeded to tell me that Jacob may never learn to communicate, that he may not graduate from high school and that he may live with me for the rest of his life. Perhaps he was trying to get a reaction out of me, but to me it was a relief to finally understand why Jacob acted the way he did. I felt a new tenderness toward him and my heart ached for all the times I lost my patience with him when he was so out of control. I knew that Jacob was not trying to be naughty and that he was more than likely acting that way because of his frustration of not being able to communicate what he was thinking or feeling. I was annoyed that the doctor was putting limitations on Jacob, but honestly I would be happy to have him live with me into adulthood.

So this began a long journey for Jacob, and myself as well. I took him to be evaluated at Early Intervention, the program the school has for delayed children. He was placed in a special preschool class for children with autism. He had speech therapy, both private and through the school. He was very routine oriented and melted down when it was time to change activities, so his teachers and I worked on things like flip cards to tell him what he needed to be doing.
About a year after being on my own, I moved in with my mom and dad. I had met Richard not long before that and he and my dad were great at helping me with Jacob when his tantrums got out of control. I remember being completely exhausted, both emotionally and physically and to have one of the men in my life(Richard or Dad) take Jacob up to his room to cool down was a lifesaver to me, probably more so than I even realized at the time.

Throughout Jacob's early years he had lots of issues. As simple as having a total meltdown if two or more honey nut cheerios were stuck together in his cereal bowl. This was so wrong in his mind it could ruin a whole day for him. Also Jacob would not use a public restroom. Strangely enough he had decided that port-a-potties were ok. I can't tell you how many times we were out and about that he just had to go, but would not go in an actual restroom. Sometimes we drove until we found a construction site and there he would happily go. His grade school had a port-o-potty near the softball field, so every day of Kindergarten, I would take him there first. At a meeting halfway through the year it was decided that he needed to learn to go anywhere and they had it hauled away and put toys and fun soap dispensers in the staff bathroom just so he would go in there. They worked hard on that issue and shortly after that we were at a movie when Jacob announced he had to go. Richard took him out and he actually went in the theater bathroom! Something so small became such a huge victory for us all.

When it was time to start Kindergarten, his wonderful preschool teachers and I decided he should be mainstreamed in a normal classroom. I was a bit terrified by this, but looking back it was the best thing we could have ever done for Jacob. He wanted so badly to be like everyone else and being in a normal setting helped him learn many important social skills. They had a special corner with pillows for him when he would tantrum, but that gradually slowed down as the school year progressed. He had an inclusion assistant for the first few years of school. Mrs Lowrance was great with him. And his case worker at Jackson School was Christine Eberly. Each time I talked to them I was reassured that they loved my son and truly enjoyed him. At our last meeting in 6th grade we marveled at how far Jacob had come and I pleaded with them to move onto middle school with him.

Jacob had a string of loving teachers throughout grade school. His inclusion assistant became part time after second grade. His part time helper was Vanessa Pittman. She is a sweet lady who is a member of our church though she goes to a different ward. One day at Stake Conference he saw her and got confused. Should he call her Mrs Pittman like he did at school, or Sister Pittman as is the custom at church. So he called her Sister Mrs Pittman.

When Jacob got to sixth grade, his teacher was Mr Phipps. Wow, a male teacher, this was a first for Jacob and he absolutely adored and looked up to this great man. All through middle school he would walk back to Jackson Elementary at least once a week to visit with his old teachers, always making sure to see Mr Phipps if he was there.

Once middle school began Jacob had a lot of wonderful male role models to adore. And I am very grateful for that. He loves school and wants to be just like everyone else, though he is not. Jacob is still unique in a lot of ways, but when people hear he is autistic they are shocked. I suppose most teenage boys have social issues to overcome, so he is not as different from everyone else as I may see him!

Jacob is a great source of pride and happiness for me. I love to watch him get involved in things. Once he starts something he does not stop. As challenging as it was, we started him in soccer when he was in first grade. This was successful thanks to a great coach and Richard for taking that activity over when I went on bed rest during my pregnancy with Annalina. Jacob loved soccer. We had a couple incidents where he would lose his temper and act out, but as the years went by he learned how to handle the competition. He got quite good, though I think last year might have been his final year. I just LOVE to watch him play at anything he does. I have said it before and it is true, I am Jacob's biggest fan!

At the beginning of middle school a friend of Jacob's got really excited about physical fitness and started running a lot. Jacob jumped all over that and now he runs every day he possibly can. He is also into basketball. I will blog about that another time. He also loves track, there is much to saw on that subject as well. It looks like I have already written quite the novel in one blog! But I am so proud of his desire to achieve despite all the challenges he has faced. Jacob is a great kid and is growing into such a great young man! When I look back, I am sometimes shocked to realize all that Jacob has overcome. I am truly blessed that he has such a positive outlook on life and that he has always been so affectionate and loving. So many with autism are not like that and it breaks my heart!
Jacob at about 3 and a half. He always had to have a hat on.

All on my own...

Well Richard and Jake left for scout camp at 3:30 this morning. I meant to get up and see them off, but the only thing I remember is Richard kissing me goodbye and now I am on my own! Tonight I truly am since even my Adrienne is gone spending the night at her dad's house. I must say they picked quite a week to go camping, it must be one of my busiest of the summer. The kids have swimming lesson every evening this week and Annalina has soccer camp each day from 11-12, and Joseph has his soccer camp on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and playgroup Wednesday morning. Why do I do these things to myself? I figure its just one week out of the year, and I can handle that. I love to be able to keep the kids active!

Annalina's soccer camp started today. There are a bunch of kids and four instructors and they do warm ups, drills, they play games and then they divide up into four teams and play some actual soccer games. It is fun to watch and there are a lot of younger kids there for Joseph to play with. This will help Annalina get ready for soccer in the fall. We use to play with Hillsboro Soccer Club, but it has gotten so expensive and many Saturdays we had to journey quite a way to play and that really eats up the weekend! A family at church organized soccer at the big field behind the church. We played last year and there were over 200 kids involved. They are divided by age and parents volunteer to coach and all games and practices are all one evening during the week, so its very easy to keep track of. And its FREE!! If Annalina chooses to keep playing when she gets older, we might look into the competitive teams, but for now this is a fun way to keep her active. Joseph is looking forward to playing next year!

Annalina is sleeping in my bed with me tonight. She enjoyed a long session of playing on pbskids.org and is now falling asleep to Castle In the Sky, one of our favorite movies. I don't know if she will be in here with me every night this week. She has a tendency to sleep at a 90 degree angle to me and I always end up on the edge of the bed. So we shall see how tonight goes!

A happy 4th..mostly

The weather for the fourth of July was very mild. It was just right as far as I was concerned. It is usually either very, very hot, or rainy and cool. The day started out overcast and cool, but not cold. The sun came out occasionally so that it warmed up and was just right all day long(in my opinion).

Richard had to work from home in the morning monitoring the data center. His company was bought by a big corporation who thinned out the employees with early retirement offers and layoffs. This has put a lot of pressure on the remaining employees, so in Richards group, they have to take turns on the weekends(and holidays) watching for errors and such.

So I got the kids up early and headed off to the parade downtown Hillsboro. I thought about taking the year off, but we have done this for the last few years and the little kids love it. And once it gets going I must admit its pretty fun! We sit on the corner at Bagley park and the kids always get lots of candy thrown at them! This year the older kids came along. My sister Megan and her family joined us again which is always fun. We got there two hours early to get our spot right on the edge of the street and it was a long wait. The kids went and played on the playground for a while which is part of the strategy of sitting at the park.

After the parade we came home and Joseph was ready for a nap. I explained to him that we would be up late watching fireworks so he needed to get some extra rest. That worked and he gladly laid down and rested for a couple of hours. Meanwhile, Megan's bunch took our three older kids to the movie "WALL-E". I did not go since Joseph was sleeping and sadly Richard had a migraine start up shortly after finishing his work. He took one of his miracle pills and it never got extremely bad, but he did spend the majority of the day in bed so as not to aggravate it. It was a very quiet afternoon, which was fine because that gave me time to make two batches of homemade ice cream for after fireworks! Actually it was not quiet at all, since the ice cream maker is VERY loud. But that was the only sound in the house for a while!! We haven't made ice cream in a long time so I looked up a couple recipes online and they turned out great!

In the evening I took the kids to my parents for a BBQ and then everyone came to our house for fireworks. Richard was able to put on a nice little show with Jeremy's help. Afterwards we had some yummy pound cake made by Megan with strawberries and ice cream. The ice cream was great, and now my family is begging for me to make more. It was easy enough, so I think it will be a new treat from time to time!

Richard & Jake have been spent the weekend getting ready for boy scout camp on Monday. They will leave at 4am and won't be back until the following Saturday. I will miss them both! It is hard to be on my own with the kids the entire week, but I am grateful for the chance Jake has to go and earn merit badges and just have fun. This is his third year and he always has a great experience. And I am very relieved that Richard will be there with him. One of the great things about Jacob and camp is that he wants to fit in and be like all the other boys, so he is open to things he would never try at home. The first year he went he discovered he liked fish when someone caught a rainbow trout and fixed it for dinner. Everyone else was trying it, so he did too(something he would NEVER do at home!!). Now he likes salmon and shrimp as well. Scout camp is a wonderful experience for Jacob and I am glad he gets to go each year. I am proud of how hard he works at it and how seriously he takes it. He will earn his Star Scout rank in August and the only has two more to go to get his Eagle Scout rank!

Gabe is 8

My nephew Gabe turned 8 a couple weeks ago. We got to go to a birthday party for him at Pappa's Pizza Place where they have huge play structures and ball pits to play in. The kids all had fun and it was cute to see them playing all over the place! Well last night we got to attend Gabe's baptism. It was a very sweet experience. When he stood up to go with my dad into the baptismal font, the grin on his face was priceless. I wish I had a photo of it. He was so excited and so happy! Afterward, Richard gave a talk on the gift of the Holy Ghost and said that Gabe was very intent on what he said. What a sweet little spirit Gabe is. We were grateful to get to participate in such a fun and spiritual event with someone we love so much!

It brought back memories of my own children's baptisms. I had been active in the church off and on, mostly off, for most of Adrienne's life. We would go sporadically, but not on a regular basis for the most part. When she turned 8 I knew she had not gone enough to truly understand what baptism meant. We were going to church at the time and Richard and I had just been married. I knew something was missing from my life, so I took the kids to church each week and in December of 2000, Adrienne chose to be baptized. She looked so beautiful and grown up to me. She has always had a strong little spirit and she knew she was ready. It was a great experience for us all, but was really the first step to many wonderful events for our family.

In fact, Richard decided he wanted to learn more about the church. He asked a lot of questions, some I knew the answers to, many I did not. But luckily my father who was Bishop for many years was more than happy to answer his questions. Before long Richard was taking the discussions with the missionaries and he too chose to be baptized. A decision that has greatly blessed our lives. We took our family to the temple to be sealed when Annalina was just 5 months old. I'll write about that another time, as it was quite the experience for our family!

When Jacob turned 8, I was worried that he would not understand the importance of baptism due to his autism. Part of preparing for baptism is to meet with the Bishop and answer some questions with him. I was sure Jacob would not know what to say! But we set an appointment anyway and the Bishop said he did fine. The day he was baptised he was calm and he was completely there with us. It was like a veil was lifted from his mind and he understood exactly what was happening. To me it was a true miracle to see my little boy, who had trouble concentrating and understanding, truly pay attention to everything around him. I know he felt the spirit that day and I know to this day he understands the importance of the gospel. Richard was able to baptize him and that meant so much to me!
Richard and Jacob

Being a family is hard these days. There are so many outside influences pulling us in different directions that it is truly a challenge trying to raise our children to be good people. I am so grateful for the gospel in my life. I have tried raising a family without a Christ centered life and I would never go back to that. I am so grateful that the Lord has blessed me with such wonderful children and a husband who is willing to help me when it comes to raising our children.

Chugga Chugga Choo Choooo

Megan's family invited us on a fun morning excursion today. The place Jeremy works for reserved a train ride for the company to enjoy. This was not just any ride, it was aboard the SP&S 700, the third largest operating steam locomotive in North America! The ride took about 45 minutes and we boarded at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland. We got to see the beautiful Willamette River, lovely views of the big city, as well as some nice forested and marshy areas. We even saw a couple of cranes coming in for a landing. The little boys, Joseph and Cousin Nathan were so excited! We all love trains, but a steam engine is a very exciting! We boarded shortly before 10am and got a seat in the open air car. Luckily it was covered as it was already hot and sunny out. The great thing about this was that all 6 of us went, a true family event. And it was so nice to get to spend time with Megan and her family and meet her Belgian friend Wendy who is spending the summer with them.

We went on a similar train ride a couple of years ago at Christmastime. It was on the 4449 and Joseph was just a baby at the time. We went to the Omnimax theater and saw Polar Express with the three older kids, then we rode the Christmas train. It was evening and was cold and dark out, but we got to ride in a lovely refurbished passenger car. Joseph slept in my arms the entire trip and Annalina was especially excited when Santa came through the car with candy canes.

We love to support these runs since they people who sponsor these events are all volunteers and they use the proceeds to continue restoration of these magnificent trains!

They are both moving on....

Today was the final day of swimming lessons for this session. I have them signed up for the next class starting Monday evening, but never stopped to think they wouldn't be able to move up. Apparently there are some skills they must know and be comfortable with to go on to the next class and I was starting to worry for Joseph, since he was still a bit shy getting his head all wet. But the great news is they both mastered all the skills necessary and are moving on to the next class!

Since today was the last day it was play day! All the kids got to go down the big water slide, which had myself and some of the other mothers a bit nervous! Annalina went down first with her instructor and was smiling! Then she went down on her own and did just fine. Joseph went down with his instructor and I was shocked he actually did it! For one who was so scared to even touch the water that first day of lessons, he was so brave!! I was very proud! Annalina got to jump off the diving board a couple times. She has great arm movements and again, I was very proud! Its great to have kids. Just thinking of them can turn a bad day around!

All session I have sat with Carrie White since she has a daughter in Annalina's class and a son in Joseph's class. They were leaving on vacation this afternoon and she was a bit stressed with lots to do getting ready to go. So her kids came over around ten and played a couple of hours. Then I took them to swimming lessons so she could get stuff done without them. They get along really great with Annalina and Joseph, we will have to do this again! After lessons the kids got a coupon for a free slice of pizza and talked me into waiting in line to get it on the way out. The pizza place is actually in the lobby of the swimming center, but as you can imagine the line was quite long since EVERY child had gotten a coupon!

Joseph fell several times today. A small fall where he smacked his forehead pretty hard, a huge fall where his whole body seemed to give out from under him and he scraped himself along the sidewalk, and a couple others. Well, this is not unusual for him, however he was so tired today that he did not handle any of them well(who would, right?). This meant a lot of "snuggle" time calming him down and getting him happy again. With our busy schedule he has not taken a nap in weeks, however Richard and I have decided that he just has to take a couple naps a week. I am sure his exhaustion just builds all week long until he has trouble coping with anything. One time today he told me "I am so tired mommy". Hmm...I think he is trying to tell me something.....

Due to the low light and the distance I had to take the photos from, most of the swimming pictures did not turn out well. Below are a few that did as well as some movies of what swimming lessons are all about!

Summer swimmin' & Stuff

The Hillsboro Aquatic Center offers swimming lessons starting at the age of 3, so a couple months ago I was able to get both Annalina and Joseph signed up for swimming lessons this summer, yes I was online the minute registration opened with my class numbers ready. The best part is that their lessons are at the same time! Annalina took lessons at the Jackson School pool before we moved, so she started in the Electric Eel class and is in the main pool. Joseph is in Blowfish I class and is in the wading pool. Its a nice pool with a beach entrance that is only 18 inches on one side and goes all they way to 3 and a half feet at the other side.

Annalina is learning some great new strokes and has fun in her class full of girls. Joseph has 2-3 other kids in his class, depending on who shows up or not. The first day he was terrified and would not let go of me to get in the water. I firmly reminded him that if he did not take lessons he could not go swimming on our vacation next month. So he sat on the top step and slowly scooted into the water. Luckily the teacher had an assistant that day, because he clung to her the entire class. The second day he held on to me, but not quite as tight, and once in the water he was ok on his own. The third day he thought about complaining, I could see it in his eyes, but decided it would be more fun in the water than with me! Now he is fine and is even excited to take a shower before getting in the pool. Something I never thought would come to pass. His class plays great games aimed at getting the kids use to the water. They get to water each other with a small watering can, all the kids love getting the teachers wet. They play ring around the rosie and they go find toys scattered around the pool in the shallow end. Often they have to put their heads under a bit to get them. I have been very impressed with this class, they make it so much fun that the kids don't even realize they are learning!

Since the pool is right next to the Shute Library and Park, we often go early and the kids play on the playground for a while. The park offers free lunches for kids at noon and a play area called the outpost. They have games set up, crafts for the kids to do, bubbles, soccer, etc and there is a theme every week. Well this week was the city police department, so the kids go to do their fingerprints on an identity card. It was fun for the kids and a vital piece of information to have on hand in case of emergency. Later this week they will be bringing a police dog for the kids to see and another day the motorcycle unit will come do some fancy synchronized driving for the kids, and Friday is CSI mystery day. Lot's of fun and such a nice thing for the city to offer the kids on a daily basis!

Need a good book?

Oh wow, I just finished an awesome book this week that I have to recommend to EVERYONE. I am even hoping to get Richard to read it(I know, I'm just dreaming now!) It was one of those books I just couldn't put down. I read and read, doing little else for three days. The kids were lucky, they got a lot of time at the park. They played, I read. We were ALL happy! Anyway, this book is called "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer. Yes, she is the author of the Twilight series, which is also a wonderful set of books, can't wait till the next one comes out in August! But Host is geared more to adults than Twilight. The writing is incredible and the storyline just sucks you in and won't let go. I could almost hear the house itself give a sigh of relief when I finished the last page. Now the kitchen is clean and the laundry pile is shrinking again. I don't want to say too much about the book, I don't want to give too much away. But please do READ IT!! I truly hope she is planning to write more!

For my birthday this year my dear sweet Grandma Kaye sent me a gift card to Barnes and Noble. I LOVE that place, but usually only get to go there to buy gifts for other people or help the kids pick out something with their gift cards. I wander the aisles dreaming of buying books for myself, but rarely do I allow myself the joy and expense of buying a new book! So last week Richard took me to use my gift card and that is where I got the Host!!

I love to read, it's an addiction really. I have to be careful about it though, as with the book above, if I start a really good book, I can't stop reading. I have to hurry and finish it so I can get back to my life! I think reading is one of the main things that got me through 21 weeks of bedrest while I was pregnant with Annalina. I read the entire "The Work and the Glory" series, which is at least 9 books, each 700-800 pages long. Another great series about the early church and the trials they went through all the way to the settlement of the Utah valley. A powerful series I have read twice now! I also love the "Children of the Promise" series which is set during World War II.

I welcome suggestions about good books, but if you have a really good one to tell me about, please advise me to clean my house thoroughly first! hehe

Underwear heaven!!

At 3 years and 2 months old, I am proud to say Joseph is FINALLY potty trained. I know there will be the occasional accident, but when he came running past me today hollering, "I need to go potty" and he actually made it in time, I knew the worst of the potty training was over!!! Yippee! This is something we have been struggling with for a while. Joseph often knew when he needed to go, but with pull ups on, why bother actually using a toilet!!! This drove me crazy. We tried several naked days, a training potty, a ring to put on the big toilet, all to no avail. He just wasn't interested. But for the last week I have not let him wear anything other than underwear, (Diego and Cars). Yes, he had a few accidents, but he caught on quick! I am so proud of him and am amazed to be moving into the stage of life that no longer requires diaper changing! Yippee for me! More great news in our household is that Adrienne has returned from her week at Young Women's Camp. Since it was her fifth year going, she was a youth leader to a group of first year girls. I hear from several different sources that her girls loved her(who wouldn't??)! She had a great time and has lots of fun stories to share. Our house just isn't the same without her here and I am feeling a little blue that she only has two years of high school left! I keep telling myself not to worry about any of that yet, but its always in the back of my mind somewhere! I just love the happiness Adrienne contributes to our home. She is wonderful and I am so lucky to be her mother!!!

Summer is finally here!

It is typically beautiful in early June, just to taunt the kids still stuck in school. We get a few really hot days to show how the school's cooling systems just aren't very effective. Not so this year. It was cool and rainy most of the time. Now, I love the rain but was missing the warm sunny early June I am used to. Richard started calling it June-uary, rather fitting. This was the first official week of summer and it turns out the weather decided to catch up with the month!

In honor of this glorious change, I made a picnic dinner and Tuesday night Richard and I took Annalina & Joseph to the park for dinner. We brought Gidget and Gadget so they could get some much needed socialization in. We went to Bagley Park where they have just recently remodeled and it was really nice. The kids played and played then would wander over and grab a triangle of sandwich and then head back to the playground, then repeat for the carrots and celery. The dogs had fun too and were quite well behaved! Many people had the same idea as us and the dogs had a lot of visitors!

After we finished eating we headed a couple blocks over to the Tuesday night Farmer's market they hold downtown each week. We haven't been in ages so it was fun to check it out. They close down Main street and have booths on each side of the street. There was live music and so much to see. We ran into a lot of people we know and had fun visiting and wandering around! The kids slept well that night, and so did I!!

Father's Day Remembered...Better late than never?

This is my beautiful family on Father's day. Jake is almost 14, Adrienne is 16, Annalina is 6 and Joseph is 3. Richard, well it is his special day, so I will not tell his age!
Happy Father's Day Richard!
I am so very blessed to have such a sweet and supportive husband. He is a wonderful father to our children and is a great leader of our family. He works hard both inside and outside our home to provide us with a comfortable life. He is kind, loving and very patient! I love his deep spirituality, his dedication to the many expectations placed on him at work, at home and at church. He has a deep inner strength that have helped me through some very difficult times in life. I am so grateful for the many miracles that brought us together and that our family was able to be sealed in the temple so that we can be together forever.

Tree vs Playground

Last week before the pizza party we had some time to kill, so we went to Shute park to play for a while. There are two great playgrounds there, but the kids were very drawn to the trees. I think they spent more time swinging on the trees than playing anywhere else. They don't look all that strong, but there were 4 kids swinging from different branches at one time and it didn't look even remotely stressed by it. It is fun to watch Annalina make friends. Most of the time when we leave I ask her who her new friend is and she says, "I don't know her name". It seems like she always finds someone new to play with. Joseph just wanders. Sometimes he plays alongside other kids, but he is just as happy on his own. Pretty normal for a three year old.

The flowers were in bloom, so I make the kids stop and pose for some pretty shots. With a busy three year old, this is the best I could do. I am so thankful we live in an area with so many beautiful places to go.
